Avanti Derma, Tijuana, Mexico

Approximately two-thirds of the patients treated at our clinic travel from outside Mexico. Most come from California, the Pacific Northwest, Texas, and the mountain states; a meaningful proportion from Canada, Australia, and Europe. This is a practical guide to the logistics — what to plan for, how much time to allocate, and what happens on each day. See also our overview of why patients travel to Tijuana.

Getting There: CBX vs. Standard Border Crossing

The Cross Border Xpress (CBX) is a pedestrian bridge that connects a terminal in San Diego directly to Tijuana International Airport. It bypasses the standard vehicle border crossing entirely. For most patients arriving from outside California, the CBX route is faster, more predictable, and less stressful than driving across.

Patients arriving into San Diego International Airport typically take a 20–30 minute rideshare to the clinic depending on border wait times. We coordinate airport pickup for every traveling patient.

The Typical 3-Day Schedule

Day 1 — Arrival and Consultation. Travel in, check into your hotel, in-person consultation at the clinic. Medical history, anatomical assessment, material discussion, and — if you and the physicians agree — treatment planning. No procedure on day one.

Day 2 — Procedure. Outpatient. Local anesthesia. 45–90 minutes in the room, plus recovery observation. You walk out the same day. Light activity that evening is fine.

Day 3 — Follow-up and Departure. Morning follow-up check, discharge instructions, and travel home. Most patients fly the same day.

Some patients extend to a 4- or 5-day stay to accommodate follow-up flexibility or to combine the trip with additional treatments (glans enhancement, PRP). We can accommodate either.

What to Bring

  • Passport (required for both directions).

  • Loose, comfortable clothing for post-procedure days.

  • Any current prescriptions, especially blood-thinners or immunosuppressants — bring the full list.

  • A companion is not required but often useful.

  • International data plan or eSIM — Mexican SIMs work but a plan simplifies arrival.

Accommodation

We partner with hotels within a 5–15 minute drive of the clinic. Rates and options are shared at booking. Most patients prefer to stay in Tijuana rather than commute across the border daily.

Insurance, Payment, and Documentation

Payment is standard at the clinic (cash, wire, or major cards). Most US and Canadian health insurance policies do not cover elective aesthetic procedures internationally — check yours before travel. We provide itemized documentation suitable for medical financing platforms, HSA/FSA reimbursement claims (jurisdiction-dependent), and any tax purpose that applies.

Post-Travel Follow-up

The structured follow-up protocol continues after you fly home: week 2, month 3, month 6, and annually. Follow-ups are conducted by video consultation from the physicians directly. Photos and measurements at each interval are part of the protocol.

When Not to Travel

Do not travel for this procedure if:

  • You have not had a full pre-travel consultation (video or in person) and treatment planning.

  • You have an active infection, uncontrolled systemic disease, or active autoimmune flare.

  • You are on active blood-thinning medication that has not been cleared.

  • You have unresolved questions about material, plan, or provider — resolve them first (see our 12 consultation questions).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tijuana safe for medical travelers?

The clinic district and CBX corridor are among the safer parts of Tijuana. We coordinate ground transport for all traveling patients and partner with hotels in low-risk zones. Use standard travel precautions and you will have no issues.

Do I need to speak Spanish?

No. Our physicians and clinical staff are fluent in English. All documentation is provided in English.

What if a complication develops after I fly home?

The structured video follow-up protocol catches most issues early. For anything that requires in-person management, we coordinate with providers in your local area where possible or arrange return visits. Our complication management guide covers the specifics.

Can I combine this with tourism?

Yes, provided the timing works with recovery. Many patients extend to 4–5 days for light activity. Longer tourism plans are compatible if scheduled after the initial recovery window.

What is the total cost of a trip including travel?

Highly variable by origin, season, and length of stay. Rough estimate for a 3-day trip from most US cities: $600–$1,500 for flights and accommodation on top of the procedure cost.

Clinical Takeaways

  • Tijuana is uniquely well-suited to medical travel from the US thanks to CBX.

  • A standard treatment trip is 3 days; extended options exist.

  • Pre-travel consultation is essential — never travel without a treatment plan already agreed.

  • Structured follow-up continues by video after you return.
